THE DAMAGE THIS POLLUTED WORLD DOES TO YOUR BODY

This first-person account from National Geographic details the reporter David Ewing Duncan's quest to identify the chemicals his body has absorbed over his lifetime.

His story began a year ago, shortly after a battery of 14 blood tests to find levels of 320 chemicals residing in his body, acquired "by merely living." Like, for example, chemicals absorbed from the dump near his boyhood Kansas home that's now an EPA superfund site.

PBDE's
Recently, Duncan was told, among other alarming news, that his test for the presence of flame-retarding compounds called polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE's), which can interfere with thyroid function, cause reproductive and neurological problems, and hamper neurological development, showed alarmingly high levels -- 10 times the average found in U.S. residents and more than 200 times the average for Swedes.

The probable cause was extensive air travel (some 200,000 miles annually) leading to exposure to airplane interiors sprayed with flame retardants.

Other chemicals that were found in his body include PFOA's, PCB's, mercury, and phthalates.

Illnesses on the Rise:
Duncan notes that several illnesses have been rising mysteriously, such as autism, leukemia, male birth defects, and childhood brain cancer, and notes that some experts suspect a link to the many man-made chemicals in our food, water, and air.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

Often, I share studies about the toll the toxic chemicals all around us -- think mercury and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) -- can take on our bodies. But the often-toxic results I report may seem a bit abstract, allowing you to feel a false sense of security. I suspect you'll feel quite differently from now on, after reading this awesome story.

Incidentally, the growing curiosity about the chemicals in his body, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), pushed the reporter to test his body for mercury after eating swordfish, one of the most toxic fish around, and halibut.

After taking a blood test 24 hours after eating the fish, his levels of mercury had more than doubled to 12 micrograms per liter, a frightening climb, says one scientist, considering children have experienced measurable losses in IQ with mercury levels in their blood at 5.8 micrograms.

That's why I urge you so often to take control of your health by making some common sense lifestyle changes. One good way to avoid toxins is to eat organic.

Where traditional farmers apply chemical fertilizers to the soil to grow their crops, organic farmers feed and build soil with natural fertilizer. Traditional farmers use insecticides to get rid of insects and disease, while organic farmers use natural methods such as insect predators and barriers for this purpose.

Traditional farmers control weed growth by applying synthetic herbicides, but organic farmers use crop rotation, tillage, hand weeding, cover crops and mulches to control weeds.

The result is that conventionally grown food is often tainted with chemical residues, which can be harmful to humans. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers 60 percent of herbicides, 90 percent of fungicides and 30 percent of insecticides to be carcinogenic.

Pesticides can have many negative influences on health, including neurotoxicity, disruption of the endocrine system, carcinogenicity and immune system suppression.

Pesticide exposure may also affect male reproductive function and has been linked to miscarriages in women.

Aside from pesticide contamination, conventional produce tends to have fewer nutrients than organic produce. On average, conventional produce has only 83 percent of the nutrients of organic produce. Studies have found significantly higher levels of nutrients such as vitamin C, iron, magnesium and phosphorus, and significantly less nitrates (a toxin) in organic crops.

If you must buy conventional produce, there are ways to reduce your pesticide exposure.

Thoroughly washing all fruits and vegetables will help, although all pesticide residues cannot be removed by washing. You can also remove the outer layer of leaves or peel vegetables if possible. Another alternative is to grow your own vegetables, although this takes space, time and climate considerations.

Other ways to avoid environmental toxins include:

  • Rather than eating fish, which is largely contaminated with PCBs and mercury, consume a cleaner source of high-quality omega-3 fats such as krill oil.
  • Avoid processed foods -- remember that they're processed with chemicals!
  • Only use natural cleaning products in your home, and switch over to natural brands of toiletries, including shampoo, toothpaste, antiperspirants and cosmetics.
  • Avoid spraying insect repellants that contain DEET on your body. There are safe, effective and natural alternatives out there, like Neem-Based Botanical Outdoor Gel.
  • Remove any metal fillings as they're a major source of mercury. Be sure to have this done by a qualified biological dentist.
  • Avoid artificial food additives of all kind, including artificial sweeteners and MSG.
  • Limit your use of drugs (prescription and over-the-counter) as much as possible. Drugs are chemicals too, and they will leave residues and accumulate in your body over time.

5 WAYS TO LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE NATURALLY

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is not something to be taken lightly. It is a serious disease, the cause of which is unknown. One fact health care professionals do know is that left untreated, high blood pressure over time can lead to serious heart disease and other vascular troubles, even death.

Blood pressure medications come in a wide range of formulas and dosages; each aimed at reducing the pressure going through the blood vessels either as the heart pumps blood or relaxes. Some medications strengthen the blood vessels while others thin the blood in an effort to reduce the strain. Trial and error is usually a doctor's only course of action when determining which combination of drugs and treatments will benefit a specific patient. The problem with this approach is the dangerous side effects, which often accompany these medications.

There is however some good news about hypertension! There are steps you can take today that will begin to lower your blood pressure almost immediately. Overtime, the result is a sustained healthy blood pressure reading that supports your blood vessels and heart for years to come.

Start with these 5 easy lifestyle changes. Always consult with your doctor before trying anything new with your health regime, and never go off of any medication without the advice of your doctor. Here is a list that any doctor can approve of:

1. Drink Water. Yes, water is a way to cleanse and refresh every part of the body, even your blood vessels. Drink 8-10 glasses each day to flush out excess salt and toxins that make their way into the blood stream. You can use water to replace some drinks containing caffeine that temporarily raise blood pressure.

2. Stop Smoking. If you are a long time smoker, you know how it affects your breathing. What you may not realize is its impact on your blood pressure. If you can't quit completely, then cut down. Even a 50% reduction in the number of cigarettes smoked each week can help.

3. Exercise. A cardiovascular workout strengthens the heart. This is important because high blood pressure over time puts added strain on the heart. Just 20 minutes, 3 times per week of a sustained increase in heart rate will aid in lowering blood pressure.

4. Eat Right. If you are eating better and exercising, a nice by-product will be weight loss. By reducing your weight by 10%, you can significantly lower blood pressure. A diet that includes the freshest fruits and vegetables will support healthy blood pressure. Reduce or eliminate salt intake, and especially beware of "hidden" sodium found abundantly in pre-packaged convenience foods.

5. Relax. Many people have a temporary raise in blood pressure when they are under stress. If you have high blood pressure because you are over weight or have a family history of hypertension, then stress raises it that much more. Try taking a walk, meditating or listening to relaxing music to take the edge off a stressful day. Make time for decompressing each and every day.

Discover many more safe and effective methods that will make a positive impact on your blood pressure level:

THE TOXIC WASTE OF ANTIBACTERIAL SOAPS

Recent studies indicate that antiseptic ingredients added to soaps are not only ineffective, they may actually be harmful.

A 2005 U.S. FDA panel reported that there is "no added benefit" from using antimicrobial products as opposed to plain soap and water.

In addition, researchers have determined that about 75 percent of a popular antimicrobial, triclocarban (TCC), resists water treatments meant to break it down and ends up in surface water and in municipal sludge used as fertilizer. TCC is known to cause cancer and reproductive problems.

Releasing antimicrobials into the environment in this manner also has the potential to increase the resistance of pathogens to clinical antibiotics. Triclosan, for example, is known to promote the growth of resistant bacteria.

Since the year 2000, about 1,500 new antibacterial products have been marketed to consumers.

 Mother Earth News October-November 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Dr. Mercola's Comment:

I've warned newsletter readers in the past about triclosan, a synthetic chemical used since the '60s in soaps, dishwashing liquids, detergents and toothpaste that eventually creates antibiotic-resistant germs.

Recently, I ran a story showing that they are really unnecessary as one of the best preventatives to keep your immune system strong against colds and the flu is simply:

Washing your hands with plain old inexpensive soap and water.

Antibacterial soap filled with synthetic compounds that can harm you and our environment are completely unnecessary. Simple soap is more than sufficient to kill bacteria and viruses.

Studies have shown that people who use antibacterial soaps and cleansers develop cough, runny nose, sore throat, fever, vomiting, diarrhea and other symptoms just as often as people who use products that do not contain antibacterial ingredients. In other words, they don't work.

In addition, increasing numbers of traditional medical experts now accept the hygiene hypothesis -- the idea that children exposed to bacteria in early childhood actually have stronger immune systems. Children who are not exposed to common bacteria, which are eliminated by excessive use of soap, may actually be more prone to allergies and asthma.

Even the American Medical Association (AMA) does not recommend antibacterial soaps.

It used to be that antibacterial soaps were used mainly in clinical health care environments, like scrubbing up prior to surgery. Now, antibacterial soaps are used in households across the country where they amount to a $16-billion-a-year industry.

Some 72 percent of all liquid soap sold in the United States now contains antibacterial ingredients. Manufacturers have relied on using fear to convince people that they need to use them to stay healthy.

In addition to washing your hands with plain soap and water, keep your immune system strong by making smart choices regarding:

  • Food
  • Sleep
  • Exercise
  • Sun exposure

You'll be far less likely to ever worry about being sick again!

LIVING ON EARTH ON SUNSCREENS

Living on Earth (NPR)
July 28, 2006
Interview by: Bruce Gellerman

GELLERMAN: Tis the season to slather on the sunscreen. And while we've all been warned about the dangers of the sun's rays, now comes a warning about the products that are supposed to protect us. Jane Houlihan is vice president of research with the Environmental Working Group. The organization is coming out with a new report evaluating the effectiveness and safety of the ingredients in sunscreens. Ms. Houlihan, thanks for joining me.

HOULIHAN: You're welcome, I'm happy to be here.

GELLERMAN: Now, the organization which you are vice president of, the Environmental Working Group, recently did some research investigating the ingredients that go into sunscreens. What did you find?

HOULIHAN: In the US we have 17 active sunscreens that are approved for use in sunscreen, and they vary a lot across the board in terms of how much protection they provide from radiation and in terms of how safe they are to put on the skin. So we looked at – are these ingredients themselves presenting some toxicity? And we found that ranges pretty widely. For instance some of the ingredients in sunscreens produce free radicals. And those can damage DNA or cells and present cancer risks.

GELLERMAN: In preparing for this interview I looked up some of those ingredients and there are some suspicions that some are neurodisruptors, some act as estrogens. Is that true?

HOULIHAN: Yes, for instance some ingredients act like estrogens in the body like octylmethoxycinnamate. That's in almost 300 sunscreens that we looked at, almost half of the sunscreens we've investigated. That's a concern because estrogen is linked to increased risk for breast cancer. And also there are concerns about what happens to those chemicals when they are washed off our bodies in the shower and they get into wastewater treatment plants and into streams and rivers.

GELLERMAN: Is there any evidence to suggest that once these ingredients wash off and are in the water that they effect the wildlife, the fish, the plant life?

HOULIHAN: Yes. Some of the early concerns about the toxicity, the dangers of sunscreens came from studies of wildlife. And what's been found is that these chemicals may be feminizing fish. So it's a big concern for wildlife. And of course those studies raise questions about what these chemicals are doing when we put them on our bodies. And so when your combining, you know, six products a day on average for men, twelve a day on average for women, that includes sunscreen too, you know, we're each applying 100 almost 200 unique ingredients to our skin every day and those exposures can add up.

GELLERMAN: Some of these chemicals on the backs of these products are unpronounceable. And for the average consumer how are they supposed to know which are safe or not safe?

HOULIHAN: It is really hard for consumers to navigate the safety of personal care products including sunscreens. And it's one reason that my group has worked for three years to give people a resource which helps guide them. And one thing we have done is compile ingredient and product safety information for about 14,000 products on the market and we've put it in a big searchable online data base called Skin Deep.

Cosmetics, personal care products – there is no requirement for pre-market safety testing and what that means is that the whole system operates on, you know, the honor system. The manufacturers are operating on an honor system and so the claims on sunscreens sometimes just flat out aren't substantiated. Some companies use ingredients that are safe to eat and other companies use human carcinogens in their products. It's a huge variation and one thing you can look for in products when you're buying them are antioxidants, because those will help quench free radicals. It's the reason manufacturers are adding them. So if you look for things like vitamin E, vitamin C, even green tea. Those kinds of ingredients can help.

GELLERMAN: Now Ms. Houlihan, what does SPF actually mean?

HOULIHAN: That sun protection factor tells you how well that product protects you from sunburn. And it's actually a number that's set based on people who volunteer to be sunburned in a laboratory. That SPF protection factor though, only covers what's called UVB radiation and it doesn't cover UVA radiation – the other dangerous side of how we're exposed to radiation from the sun. And that kind of radiation actually penetrates deeper into the skin. And the FDA is way behind the curve. They haven't set standards yet for UVA protection. Most other countries have standards. So, when you're buying a sunscreen you have to do your homework. You have to first of all look for products that are claiming broad spectrum protection, because that's at least a start. And then look on the back of the label for ingredients like zinc oxide or avobenzone that are actual UVA protectors.

GELLERMAN: Zinc oxide is the stuff that I used to watch lifeguards put on their nose.

HOULIHAN: Right. So it used to be white and really noticeable on the skin. And formulations over the last few years have been made that use smaller particles of zinc oxide that are transparent. So you don't have that problem of looking white all over when you use the product.

GELLERMAN: Now vitamin D has been called the sunshine vitamin and if I screen out the sun am I kind of diminishing my ability to get vitamin D?

HOULIHAN: One thing we know is that it doesn't take much sun to give us enough vitamin D. So if you're even out in the sun for say 15 minutes you're getting enough of a dose of sunshine to get your vitamin D.

GELLERMAN: Ms. Houlihan, thank you very much.

CAN WASHING DISHES REALLY HARM YOUR HEALTH?
By Richard Mesquita, AquaMD

(AquaMD is the water testing division of the American Water Council, a nationally respected provider of water education and testing services. AquaMD has teamed with Dr. Mercola to provide you with diagnostic services and the Dr. Mercola water testing packages at http://www.aquamd.com/mercola/labtests.cfm.)

In case you missed it, a study by the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University showed that washing dishes by hand and using an antibacterial dishwashing liquid soap, has unintended consequences. Specifically, the chemical triclosan contained in the soap was found to interact with chlorinated water to produce significant amounts of chloroform.

Chloroform is part of a family of four disinfection byproducts known as Trihalomethanes (TTHMs). When water companies add chlorine to water -- to kill or prevent bacteria from growing in it -- TTHMs interact with organic matter in their distribution system to cause disinfection byproducts.

Typically, TTHMs enter your body thru inhalation. So if you are washing dishes by hand, you are naturally inhaling water vapors that carry TTHMs. This study found the amount of chloroform in water increased significantly when it came in contact with antibacterial soap containing Triclosan.

And, if that wasn't enough of a problem, it turns out triclosan has its own concerns.

What is Triclosan?
Triclosan is a chemical that's been used since the 1960s because of its antibacterial properties. It's an active ingredient in many household products:

  • Detergents
  • Dishwashing liquids
  • Soaps
  • Deodorants
  • Cosmetics
  • Lotions
  • Anti-microbial creams
  • Toothpastes
  • Body washes

It's also added to plastics, polymers and textiles to give them antibacterial properties.

A little-known fact about triclosan: When this chemical comes in contact with your skin, it stays there for many hours. That's far different than plain soap: Once it's rinsed off, it really is off.

Triclosan is a type of chlorophenol. Chemicals containing chlorophenol are known as powerful pesticides, which means they are very good at killing things like insects and small rodents. That's why triclosan is added to antibacterial soap, detergents and other products: To kill any bacteria they come in contact with.

Unfortunately, common sense tells you, when you add chemicals designed to kill things to consumer products, you are going to have trouble. And in fact, many consumers complain about skin rashes and other irritations when using products containing chlorophenols. Chlorophenols are linked to cancers too.

It's also believed small amounts of dioxins and dibenzofurans (very toxic substances) can be created when triclosan is manufactured. If these harmful substances are created, they are also added along with triclosan to all those consumer products I listed earlier.

Since triclosan is found in such a wide range of consumer goods, it has become very prevalent in our rivers and streams, as well as the aquatic life in our waterways. In fact, triclosan has also been found in mother's breast milk, likely the result of extensive exposure to products containing it.

What Can You do to Protect Yourself?

Please don't stop washing dishes. Just switch to non-toxic soaps. Look for ones made from natural ingredients (those found in nature). Avoid soaps with man-made additives, such as triclosan, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, DEA (diethanolomine), Isopropyl Alcohol, artificial fragrances, FD&C Colors (colors approved for food, drugs and cosmetics) and Propylene Glycol.

The same thing applies to cleaners you use in and around your home. There are plenty of natural alternatives to choose from to protect your health.

Find out what levels of TTHMs or other contaminants are in your water. Then, get the right purification system to treat your specific problem. As the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University proved, if your water is contaminated, you are affected by it even when you don't drink it. You could still be using contaminated water to shower, bathe, wash your hands or clean your clothes.

MELANOMA MIRACLES
by Ginny Fraser

In 2001 I was diagnosed with Stage IV malignant melanoma, with tumours in my brain, spleen, stomach and lungs. I was given six months to live. What saved my life was a radical programme of alternative treatment, including much of what Phillip Day speaks about in his books and talks.
Although this was not my first brush with melanoma, it took me totally by surprise as I had been well for five years. I had had two previous bouts of melanoma. The primary was a mole on my arm back in 1993, which I had excised (along with a chunk of my arm) and then got on with my life without really any introspection about why I had got cancer and what I could do to make sure it didn't come back. Then three years later a tumour was found in the lymph nodes under my right arm. I had surgery to remove the affected nodes, and realised I couldn't just ignore it like I did last time. The approach I chose was the Gerson Therapy, which I did intensively for two years to make sure I was really clear.

So, when I went back to the Marsden five years later neither my doctors nor I were really expecting any melanoma to be showing up to account for my symptoms of squiffy vision, dizziness and profound exhaustion.  I was pretty quickly put onto 16 mg per day of dexamethozone (steroids), and went away for Christmas to contemplate my next steps. My spiritual beliefs have always played a big role in my life, and the Christmas break included a spiritual retreat which provided a great opportunity to muster my inner resources and develop the self-belief and determination to do all I could to get better.

The quest for the best treatment began shortly after my Christmas, by which time I was swollen up with the steroids, with a ravenous appetite and a face like a chipmunk. I enrolled friends in researching the Internet for melanoma treatments (there is SO much out there, and a lot of it is quite upsetting to read, so it's a great task to delegate). After much research I ended up choosing a naturopathic treatment with London-based doctor, Etienne Callebout.

At the same time I was also researching radiotherapy (not knowing at that time that there was any alternative and being pretty scared by the stories of side-effects like early onset of Alzheimer's and brain damage that can result from it). In February 2002 I embarked on a course of whole-brain radiotherapy, daily for two weeks with weekends off. It was easy, painless and took just a few minutes to be "zapped". Its side effects were not so pleasant. I could only walk like an old lady - very slowly. I felt sick and my hair fell out. I was totally exhausted, would sleep in the day and evening then wake at 2am, ravenous. On a few occasions I was "bonkers", which was really scary.

Apart from the radiotherapy, the Marsden could offer me no treatment for the body tumours that had any decent chance of success. There were some chemotherapy agents, but with such low effectiveness that even my doctor told me not to bother. So everything at this point rested on the success of the radiotherapy. A few weeks after the treatment finished I got the results. They were not good. According to the scans, the tumours had not responded.

That was a tough meeting. You always know when it's bad news by the look on the doctor's face the minute they come in the room. The good ones deliver bad news with compassion and empathy. The bad ones either overdo the phoney caring or don't even try, escaping this uncomfortable time as quickly as they possibly can.  Regardless of the bad radiotherapy result, I knew I couldn't give up, and I began Dr Callebout's regime a month or so after radiotherapy ended. He is a qualified medical doctor, homeopath and specialist in alternative treatments for cancer. He admitted he hadn't treated anyone with my level of cancer before but said he would give it a go.

Emotionally this whole time was very different to anything I would have imagined. I felt very strong. I felt incredibly supported. Friends wrote, visited, including four friends who separately travelled from the US to spend time with me. People gave me money. And Stacey, my friend and lodger, chose to spend the time taking care of me. I felt very spiritually connected and supported. I was brought up a Christian and felt a very intimate source of support from Jesus. My mother wrote to dozens of contemplative Anglican orders and asked the nuns to pray for me. The esoteric church I belong to also provided huge energetic assistance. I really felt Grace was extended to me in a big way. I had a new sense of serenity. It was as though all the areas I normally obsess about - money, men, work, was I good enough, was I pretty enough, was I clever enough - they all seemed to wither away in the face of this huge challenge - will I live or will I die? I actually felt very happy, despite the physical difficulties I was undergoing.

The regime I took on was tough, but as I was a survivor of the Gerson Therapy (13 juices a day and five coffee enemas - for two years), I knew I could hack it. My regime consisted of a pure diet - organic vegetables, nothing processed, no booze, no coffee etc. Six freshly squeezed vegetable juices per day, three coffee enemas daily, castor oil rubs, Epsom salts baths, ice packs and hot packs and a footbath in mustard and cayenne pepper. I also had to take 122 tablets per day to boost my immune system and begin to dissolve the tumours.  My tablets included large doses of B17 (Phillip Day has written about these extensively); handfuls of digestive enzymes (as recommended in the Kelley-Gonzales approach) and numerous supplements to boost my system generally.

It was a tough regime, but it felt great to be the one responsible for my own recovery. The sense of empowerment far outweighed the hassle of what was physically involved. But best of all, it worked.

I had a CT scan around four months later which showed that all the tumours had either reduced significantly or disappeared altogether. The hospital took credit for the brain tumours claiming that radiotherapy effects often take a while to kick in and that the previous scan was done too early to show a true result, but they were flabbergasted by the reduction in the other areas where I had had NO conventional treatment. They were surprised, but not interested enough to ask me in any detail exactly how this had been achieved. The term "spontaneous remission" was used - which I have since learned is a commonly heard blanket term used by unenlightened medics for any improvement not caused by conventional medical treatment.

The other day I heard another corker on my regular check-up visit to RMH. This time the doctor commented that the disappearance of the tumours in my body "could well be attributed to the brain radiotherapy"! I've got to the stage now where I am no longer angry about this approach, all I can do is laugh at the sometimes complete reluctance to see any value in anything other than their terrible trio of treatments (surgery, chemo and radiotherapy).

I continued working on my "spontaneous remission" for a further seven months, and a scan in November 2002 showed that everything had gone, bar a small abnormality in my spleen. As I write today in June 2005 I am enjoying excellent health. In fact, in August I am going on a trek in the Himalayas. I still juice, eat organic and do enemas and will always take good care of my health.

Before I got sick I worked as a coach (a bit like a counsellor) and facilitator (running training courses). Now I am using those skills (in combination with my cancer experience and research) to offer coaching support to people affected by cancer who want to take a proactive approach to their recovery. I work over the telephone or face-to-face looking at the two elements Phillip is examining on his current Attitude Tour - the physical and the mental, and how to make changes in both that will lead to wellness on every level.
Someone once said that during their experience of cancer they had wished there was someone like a midwife who could be with them - someone knowledgeable and kind - who could be their witness and their supporter. That's what I wished I'd had and what I am offering to anyone affected by cancer.

DON'T DRINK YOUR MILK

Processing Is the Problem:

The path that transforms healthy milk products into allergens and carcinogens begins with modern feeding methods that substitute high-protein, soy-based feeds for fresh green grass and breeding methods to produce cows with abnormally large pituitary glands so that they produce three times more milk than the old fashioned scrub cow. These cows need antibiotics to keep them well.

Their milk is then pasteurized so that all valuable enzymes are destroyed (lactase for the assimilation of lactose; galactase for the assimilation of galactose; phosphatase for the assimilation of calcium).

Literally dozens of other precious enzymes are destroyed in the pasteurization process. Without them, milk is very difficult to digest. The human pancreas is not always able to produce these enzymes; over-stress of the pancreas can lead to diabetes and other diseases.

The butterfat of commercial milk is homogenized, subjecting it to rancidity. Even worse, butterfat may be removed altogether. Skim milk is sold as a health food, but the truth is that butter-fat is in milk for a reason.

Without it the body cannot absorb and utilize the vitamins and minerals in the water fraction of the milk. Along with valuable trace minerals and short chain fatty acids, butterfat is America's best source of preformed vitamin A.

Synthetic vitamin D, known to be toxic to the liver, is added to replace the natural vitamin D complex in butterfat. Butterfat also contains re-arranged acids which have strong anti-carcinogenic properties.

Non-fat dried milk is added to 1% and 2% milk. Unlike the cholesterol in fresh milk, which plays a variety of health promoting roles, the cholesterol in non-fat dried milk is oxidized and it is this rancid cholesterol that promotes heart disease.

Like all spray dried products, non-fat dried milk has a high nitrite content. Non-fat dried milk and sweetened condensed milk are the principle dairy products in third world countries; use of ultra high temperature pasteurized milk is widespread in Europe.

Other Factors Regarding Milk:

Milk and refined sugar make two of the largest contributions to food induced ill health in our country. That may seem like an overly harsh statement, but when one examines the evidence, this is a reasonable conclusion.

The recent approval by the FDA of the use of BGH (Bovine Growth Hormone) by dairy farmers to increase their milk production only worsens the already sad picture.

BGH causes an increase in an insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) in the milk of treated cows. IGF-1 survives milk pasteurization and human intestinal digestion. It can be directly absorbed into the human bloodstream, particularly in infants.

It is highly likely that IGF-1 promotes the transformation of human breast cells to cancerous forms. IGF-1 is also a growth factor for already cancerous breast and colon cancer cells, promoting their progression and invasiveness.

It is also possible for us to absorb the BGH directly from the milk. This will cause further IGF-1 production by our own cells.

BGH will also decrease the body fat of cows. Unfortunately, the body fat of cows is already contaminated with a wide range of carcinogens, pesticides, dioxin, and antibiotic residues. When the cows have less body fat, these toxic substances are then transported into the cows' milk.

BGH also causes the cows to have an increase in breast infections for which they must receive additional antibiotics.

Prior to BGH, 38%of milk sampled nationally was already contaminated by illegal residues of antibiotics and animal drugs. This will only increase with the use of BGH. One can only wonder what the long term complications will be for drinking milk that has a 50% chance it is contaminated with antibiotics.

There is also a problem with a protein enzyme called xanthine oxidase which is in cow's milk. Normally, proteins are broken down once you digest them.

However, when milk is homogenized, small fat globules surround the xanthine oxidase and it is absorbed intact into your blood stream. There is some very compelling research demonstrating clear associations with this absorbed enzyme and increased risks of heart disease.

Ear specialists frequently insert tubes into the ear drums of infants to treat recurrent ear infections. It has replaced the previously popular tonsillectomy to become the number one surgery in the country.

Unfortunately, most of these specialists don't realize that over 50% of these children will improve and have no further ear infections if they just stop drinking their milk.

This is a real tragedy. Not only is the $3,000 spent on the surgery wasted, but there are some recent articles supporting the likelihood that most children who have this procedure will have long term hearing losses.

It is my strong recommendation that you discontinue your milk products. If you find this difficult, I would start for several weeks only, and reevaluate how you feel at that time.

This would include ALL dairy, including skim milk and Lact-Aid milk, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream. If you feel better after several weeks you can attempt to rotate small amounts of one form of milk every four days.

You probably are wondering what will happen to your bones and teeth if you stop milk. The majority of the world's population takes in less than half the calcium we are told we need and yet they have strong bones and healthy teeth.

Cows' milk is rich in phosphorous which can combine with calcium -- and can prevent you from absorbing the calcium in milk. The milk protein also accelerates calcium excretion from the blood through the kidneys.

This is also true when you eat large amount of meat and poultry products. Vegetarians will need about 50% less calcium than meat eaters because they lose much less calcium in their urine.

It is possible to obtain all your calcium from dark green vegetables (where do you think the cow gets their's from?). The darker the better. Cooked collard greens and kale are especially good. If you or your child is unable to take in large amounts of green vegetables, you might want to supplement with calcium.

If you can swallow pills, we have an excellent, inexpensive source called Calcium Citrate, which has a number of other minerals which your body requires to build up maximally healthy bone.

It is much better than a simple calcium tablet. You can take about 1,000 mg a day. For those who already suffer from osteoporosis, the best calcium supplement is microcrystalline hydroxyapatite.

It is also important that you take vitamin D in the winter months from November to March. Normally your skin converts sunshine to vitamin D, but the sunshine levels in the winter are very low unless you visit Florida or Mexico type areas.

Most people obtain their vitamin D from milk in the winter; so if you stop it, please make sure you are taking calcium with vitamin D or a multi vitamin with vitamin D to prevent bone thinning.

Most people are not aware that the milk of most mammals varies considerably in its composition. For example, the milk of goats, elephants, cows, camels, wolves, and walruses show marked differences, in their content of fats, protein, sugar, and minerals. Each was designed to provide optimum nutrition to the young of the respective species. Each is different from human milk.

In general, most animals are exclusively breast-fed until they have tripled their birth weight, which in human infants occurs around the age of one year. In no mammalian species, except for the human (and domestic cat) is milk consumption continued after the weaning period. Calves thrive on cow milk. Cow's milk is designed for calves.

Cow's milk is the number one allergic food in this country. It has been well documented as a cause in diarrhea, cramps, bloating, gas, gastrointestinal bleeding, iron-deficiency anemia, skin rashes, atherosclerosis, and acne.

It is the primary cause of recurrent ear infections in children. It has also been linked to insulin dependent diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, infertility, and leukemia.

Hopefully, you will reconsider your position on using milk as a form of nourishment. Small amounts of milk or milk products taken infrequently, will likely cause little or no problems for most people.

However, the American Dairy Board has done a very effective job of marketing this product. Most people believe they need to consume large, daily quantities of milk to achieve good health. NOTHING could be further from the truth.

Public health officials and the National Dairy Council have worked together in this country to make it very difficult to obtain wholesome, fresh, raw dairy products. Nevertheless, they can be found with a little effort. In some states, you can buy raw milk directly from farmers.

Whole, pasteurized, non-homogenized milk from cows raised on organic feed is now available in many gourmet shops and health food stores. It can be cultured to restore enzyme content, at least partially. Cultured buttermilk is often more easily digested than regular milk; it is an excellent product to use in baking.

Many shops now carry whole cream that is merely pasteurized (not ultra pasteurized like most commercial cream); diluted with water, it is delicious on cereal and a good substitute for those allergic to milk.

Traditionally made creme fraiche (European style sour cream), it also has a high enzyme content

Chlorinated Water Can Affect Cancer Risk

Lifetime consumption of chlorinated tap water can more than double the risk of bladder and rectal cancers in certain individuals, two new studies conclude.

Both studies examined the lifetime water-consumption patterns, diets and lifestyles of over 2,200 middle-aged and elderly Iowans suffering from either bladder, colon, or rectal cancers. Those profiles were then compared with those of a pool of nearly 2,000 healthy 'controls'.

Recent research has suggested that chlorine reacts with naturally-found organic compounds in water to form what the study authors call "chlorination byproducts."

They say many of these byproducts are "mutagenic and/or carcinogenic." The first study found that smoking men who drank chlorinated tap water for more than 40 years faced double the risk of bladder cancer compared with smoking men who drank nonchlorinated water. Women who drank chlorinated water, on the other hand, had only slightly raised risks for bladder cancers, regardless of (their) smoking status.

The second study found that rates for rectal cancers for both sexes escalated with duration of consumption of chlorinated water. Individuals on low-fiber diets who also drank chlorinated water for over 40 years more than doubled their risk for rectal cancer, compared with lifetime drinkers of nonchlorinated water.

Similar differences were also found between the risk patterns of chlorinated-water drinkers who exercised at least once a week, and those who exercised just once a month, or less. Experts have long recommended regular exercise as one means of reducing one's risk of rectal and other cancers.

The study found no link between the long-term consumption of chlorinated tap water and the incidence of colon cancer. This was not surprising, the researchers explain, since colon tumors have very different patterns of genesis and development compared with rectal tumors.

They speculate that the source of chlorinated tap water may help determine its potential to promote cancers.

Since surface water (such as that found in lakes and reservoirs) usually contains higher concentrations of organic compounds, the study authors say it is also more likely to contain higher levels of (potentially carcinogenic) chlorination byproducts, compared with water sourced from deep underground.

MSG is Why You Want to Avoid McDonald's Like the Plague

A close reading of a list of classic McDonald's recipes from the '50s through the '70s reveals a disturbing amount of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), a chemical whose potential health effects have caused considerable controversy.

However, the use of MSG in McDonald's food is not solely a matter of history. MSG is still present in some forms in many modern McDonald's products, including their Grilled Chicken Filet, Sausage Patty, and French Fries.

Many other foods on their menu, especially those that contain "natural flavors" or "hydrolyzed protein" as ingredients, also contain MSG. Most of the MSG is in the form of glutamic acid, the chemical's active component.

Studies have indicated that MSG can cause severe allergies and even brain damage. Most baby food companies have voluntarily stopped using MSG in their products.
Mr-imp.net

Dr. Mercola's Comment (11 May 06):

Glutamic acid (MSG) is a major component of McDonald's food. While there's simply no excuse for consuming their French fries or diet soft drinks, one could make a logical argument to have their hamburgers, as long as you are not a carb type.

But this does not take into consideration the MSG added to their foods. MSG is a toxic substance people consume in processed foods, and probably wouldn't if they knew it causes many of their brain cells to die.
McDonald's and most all other fast food restaurants use MSG to help sell their foods. MSG is very inexpensive and makes the food taste good -- which in many ways is similar to sugar -- but MSG is far more toxic than sugar.

MSG, like L-cysteine and aspartame, are excitotoxins, chemical transmitters that allow brain cells to communicate, as described in Dr. Russell's Blaylock's book, Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills. Excitotoxins are exactly what they sound like: Toxins like MSG that excite your brain cells to DEATH!

The bottom line is that you are going to need to invest some time in the kitchen if you want to stay healthy and avoid fast foods, which if consumed regularly will accelerate your departure from this planet.

Aluminum Exposure Increases Your Alzheimer's Risks

The possibility of a link between aluminum and Alzheimer's disease has been raised once more following the autopsy of a British woman who died of the illness. Sixteen years before her death, an industrial accident had contaminated her local drinking water with aluminum sulphate.

No Family History of Dementia
An autopsy showed that Carole Cross suffered from a rare form of early-onset Alzheimer's, and also indicated high levels of aluminum in her bodily tissues. There was no history of dementia in the woman's family.

20,000 Exposed

In 1988, a truck driver accidentally poured 20 tons of aluminum sulphate into a tank containing drinking water. Some 20,000 people in the village of Camelford, including Ms. Cross, were exposed to the chemical for several weeks. Several other inhabitants of Camelford are also reported to be suffering from dementia.

Nature.com April 21, 2006

Dr. Mercola's Comment (13 May 06):

Many of you are aware that we are in the midst of an impending Alzheimer's epidemic. Even though many are on statin drugs to lower their risk of heart disease, that does absolutely nothing to prevent Alzheimer's.

So what good is it to prevent heart disease and lose your brain, or die from some miserable cancer, because you did not address the underlying cause of most chronic disease, which is related to elevated insulin levels?

An interesting factoid: Even though the UK patient in this study had no family history of Alzheimer's, she did have a genetic marker (APOE) for the disease, leading some to believe her heavy exposure to aluminum accelerated the development of the disease.

Whether that is the case or not, this report underscores one more reason why you must stay away from heavy metals such as aluminum.

It is very difficult to avoid all environmental toxins but does that mean we should give up? What you can do is limit your exposure as much as possible by following some basic common sense tips:

• Buy and eat, as much as possible, organic produce and free-range, organic foods.
• Rather than eating fish, which is largely contaminated with PCBs and mercury, right-size your intake of omega-3 fats by taking a high-quality krill oil.
• Only use natural cleaning products in your home, and switch over to natural brands of toiletries, including shampoo, toothpaste, antiperspirants and cosmetics. You can find these in your local health food store or you can search online.
• Remove any metal fillings from your teeth, as they're a major source of mercury. Be sure to have this done by a qualified biological dentist.
• Avoid artificial food additives of all kind, including artificial sweeteners and MSG.
• Seek to build your health up through the nutrition insights detailed in my Total Health Program, and then limit your use of drugs (prescription and over-the-counter) as much as possible. Drugs are chemicals too, and they will leave residues and accumulate in your body over time.

NEW STUDY CONFIRMS VITAMIN C EFFECTIVE AS CANCER TREATMENT

by Patrick Holford

High-dose vitamin C has proven highly effective in treating cancer, according to research published by the US National Academy of Science. This confirms studies in the 1970s by the Nobel prize winner Dr Linus Pauling, who gave 100 terminally ill cancer patients 10 grams (10,000mg) of vitamin C each day, the equivalent of 220 oranges, and compared their outcome with 1,000 cancer patients given conventional therapy. The survival rate was five times higher in those taking vitamin C and while all of the 1,000 “control patients”  died, 13 of the vitamin C patients were still alive ten years later, with 12 apparently free from cancer. In the 1990’s Drs Murata and Morishige of Saga University in Japan showed that cancer patients on 5 to 30grams of vitamin C lived 6 times longer than those on 4 grams or less, while those suffering from cancer of the uterus lived 15 times longer on vitamin C therapy.

However, Pauling’s findings were discredited, largely due to an apparent ‘replication’ of their study by the Mayo Clinic in the US . There were, however, two major differences between the original trial and that of the Mayo Clinic. The ‘terminal’ patients in the original trial kept taking vitamin C every day, while those in the Mayo Clinic trial stopped after an average of 75 days. Also, in Pauling’s study patients were given a combination of oral and intravenous vitamin C, while in the Mayo Clinic study only oral vitamin C was used.

In a comprehensive study of the effects of intravenous vitamin C by researchers from the US National Institutes of Health, led by Dr Qi Chen, intravenous vitamin C has proven to cause cancer cell death across a wide range of cancers including lymphoma, breast, lung, colon, kidney and skin (melanomas) in both animal and human cancer cells. This high dose vitamin C led to the formation of hydrogen peroxide, a chemical that can kill cancer cells. Normal cells were not affected by vitamin C at any concentration. This research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science this week, proves that intravenous vitamin C is a potentially highly effective and inexpensive non-toxic form of chemotherapy.

This may also explain why high dietary intakes of vitamin C are associated with lower risk for cancer. In a comprehensive review of over 100 studies, author Dr Gladys Block, formerly with the National Cancer Institute, concludes, “Approximately 90 epidemiologic studies have examined the role of vitamin C or vitamin-C-rich foods in cancer prevention, and the vast majority have found statistically significant protective effects. Evidence is strong for cancers of the oesophagus, oral cavity, stomach and pancreas. There is also substantial evidence of a protective effect in cancers of the cervix, rectum and breast. Even in lung cancer there is recent evidence of a role for vitamin C.”

My advice for cancer patients is to find a doctor who can administer intravenous vitamin C and, failing that, supplement 10 to 20 grams diluted in half water and juice, up to ‘bowel tolerance’ level meaning below the amount that causes loose bowels, under the supervision of a nutritional therapist. For the prevention of cancer eating as much fruit and vegetables as possible and supplementing 1 gram twice a day, is a sensible precaution. The best foods for vitamin C are broccoli, peppers, berries and citrus fruit.
